Description
MR-J3-D05 MITSUBISHI Brake Unit/Discharge Unit
Product Dimensions:
Product Description (Detailed Explanation)
When a servo motor slows down quickly or holds back a vertical load, it acts as a generator, sending energy back to the servo amplifier. If this energy exceeds the capacity of the amplifier’s internal capacitors, it causes an “Overvoltage Alarm” (AL.33).
The MR-J3-D05 is an external resistor-based unit that connects to the amplifier’s DC bus. It monitors the bus voltage and, when necessary, switches the excess energy into high-wattage resistors to be dissipated as heat. This allows for faster machine cycle times and higher dynamic performance without system trips.

Product Advantages (Key Benefits)
-
Improved Cycle Times: Enables rapid deceleration of high-inertia loads, allowing the machine to start the next operation sooner.
-
System Stability: Prevents nuisance overvoltage trips, ensuring continuous production and reducing downtime.
-
Compact Integration: Designed to match the form factor and mounting requirements of the MR-J3 large-capacity amplifiers.
-
Thermal Protection: Built-in thermal sensors provide a dry-contact output that can be wired to the PLC or the amplifier’s emergency stop circuit to prevent fire or damage in case of resistor overheating.
-
Ease of Connection: Utilizes standard terminal blocks for the “P” and “C” (or D) connections on the servo amplifier.
Precautions (Important Notes)
-
Heat Generation: This unit becomes very hot during operation. It must be mounted in a well-ventilated area with significant clearance (at least 100mm) from other heat-sensitive components or plastic wiring ducts.
-
Wiring Safety: Always use high-temperature rated wire for the connection between the amplifier and the brake unit. Ensure the “P” and “C” terminals are not reversed.
-
Thermal Link: The thermal protector (G1/G2 terminals) must be wired into the control circuit. Failure to do so could result in a fire if the unit’s duty cycle is exceeded and it overheats.
-
Configuration: After installation, the servo amplifier parameters (typically PA02) must be adjusted to recognize the external brake option.
Product Applications (Typical Use Cases)
-
High-Inertia Conveyors: Systems carrying heavy parts that require frequent, sudden stops.
-
Vertical Axes / Elevators: Used in CNC machines or automated warehouses where gravity forces the motor to regenerate energy during the downward stroke.
-
Packaging Machines: Fast-acting rotary cutters or wrappers that have high rotational energy that must be dumped quickly.
-
Printing Presses: Large rollers with significant mass that need to be synchronized and stopped precisely.
