The ABB CI868A is a communication interface module designed to connect an AC 800M controller to external Ethernet devices using the IEC 61850 – Edition 2 standard. This standard is primarily used in Substation Automation, allowing for the integration of Process Automation and Electrical Control within the same controller.

The CI868A module works in conjunction with the TP868 Baseplate, which features two RJ45 Ethernet connectors. The CH1 connector on the baseplate supports 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps communication speeds. The baseplate also has a code lock to prevent the installation of incorrect unit types.

The CI868A expansion unit itself contains the CEX-Bus logic, a communication unit, and a DC/DC converter that draws power from the +24 V supply via the CEX-Bus. The Ethernet connection from the CI868A should be made to the main network through an Ethernet switch.
